What does a construction mechanic do?

As a construction mechanic (m/f/x), you will be responsible for manufacturing large and small steel and metal components. To do this, you will use equipment such as a laser, a flame cutter and CNC machines. You will bend and fold sheet metal, weld and perform drilling. You will manufacture components according to drawings and also assemble, maintain and repair them.

What to expect:

  • You’ll manufacture components using hand-held tools and machines.
  • You will maintain technical systems and carry out repairs on individual assemblies and entire machines.
  • You will assemble and disassemble large and small sub-assemblies.
  • You will weld and solder components and assemblies using various technologies.
  • You will bend, fold and cut sheet metal and profiles.

What you should bring to the role:

  • Education: Good knowledge of mathematics, physics and technology; a good secondary school leaving certificate or higher
  • Technical interest: an interest in technology, repairing small items, working on vehicles
  • Care and precision: An overview of all work steps and their logical sequence
  • A delicate touch: Precise planning, measuring and checking of small components

How long does the apprenticeshiplast?

Usually 3.5 years under the dual system. The duration may be shortened if you have prior qualifications (vocational A-levels, university entrance qualification for applied sciences or a completed technical vocational training programme).

Where will I work?

You will spend most of your training in production and rotate through various departments:

  • In production, you can expect to:
    • Cutting, shaping and welding metal components
    • Assembling and dismantling sub-assemblies and structures
    • Working according to technical drawings and plans
    • Checking the dimensions and quality of the manufactured parts
    • Operating machinery such as welding equipment, bending machines or flame cutters
    • Maintenance and upkeep of the tools and equipment used
  • In design:
    You will learn the basics of technical drawing as well as how to read and interpret drawings (fits, surface finishes, welding symbols).
