What does a machinist do?

As a machinist, you’ll manufacture precision components from metal and non-metallic materials. You’ll use processes such as turning, milling, grinding and drilling, and work with computer-controlled machines and manufacturing systems.

What to expect:

You’ll work on state-of-the-art machines such as 5-axis machining-centres and high-performance CNC lathes with powered tools.

You will learn:

  • How to program and set up CNC milling and turning machines independently
  • The advantages and applications of powered tools in turning
  • Selecting materials appropriately and performing precise treatment on them
  • Reading and implementing technical drawings
  • Inspecting and documenting components using state-of-the-art measurement technology

What you should bring to the role:

  • Education: Good knowledge of maths, physics and technology; a good secondary school certificate or higher
  • An interest in technical matters
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Good judgement

How long does the apprenticeship programme last?

Usually 3.5 years under the dual system. The duration may be shortened if you have prior knowledge.

  • Specialist further training: metal forming, CNC and CAD technology, production and manufacturing technology
  • Career progression training: Mechanical Technology Technician (specialising in machining technology), Master Craftsman’s examination
