What does an industrial mechanic do?

As an industrial mechanic, you’ll use materials that have undergone treatment to create workpieces and assemble finished machine components. You’ll check your work using measuring instruments and carry out maintenance and repair work at the customer’s premises.

In short: a qualified industrial mechanic doesn’t have a boring job on an assembly line – because they build the assembly line.

What to expect:

• Basics
  You’ll be shown the correct techniques for turning, milling and filing, so that by the end you’ll be holding the exact component the machine was missing.
• Monitoring production and mechanical processes
  You’ll ensure that machines and plant are always ready for operation and functioning optimally.
• Assembling machines and plants
  At customers’ production sites, you’ll assemble entire machines and systems and commission them.

What you should bring to the role:

• Education: Good knowledge of maths, physics and technology; a good secondary school leaving certificate or higher
• An interest in technology
• Attention to detail and precision
• Good judgement
• Team spirit: Mechanical engineering is all about teamwork!

How long does the apprenticeship last?

Usually 3.5 years under the dual system. The duration may be shortened if you have prior knowledge.

Where will I work?

You’ll spend most of your training in production. You’ll work in the following departments:

• In the production department, your scope of duties will include:
  • Working according to technical drawings and plans
  • Manufacturing and treatment of metal and machine parts
  • Setting up and testing mechanical systems
  • Analysing and rectifying faults
  • Installation, maintenance and repair of technical equipment
  • Quality control and documentation
• In design:
  You will learn the basics of technical drawing, as well as how to read and interpret drawings.
